Mets: Trevor Williams is a trade chip

Williams is in the middle of a one-season deal worth $3.9 million. He will be a free agent this offseason. The Mets will likely want to make sure they get a return for Williams as they are likely to part ways with the pitcher in free agency.

Williams currently has a record of 1-3 in 32.3 innings and 10 games pitched, five of which he started. He has an ERA of 3.58, giving up six walks and13 earned runs so far this season. He has struck out 28. It does appear the Mets are using Williams in a more long relief role now, but he does have one blown save.

The Mets have attempted to use Williams as best as they can, having him eat up innings in bullpen games. It would seem the Mets would use him as a trade chip in exchange for an upgrade. While Williams may not be a primary target for a team, he could become a project for an innovative pitching coach. It appears Williams may be in desperate need of a change in scenery.

Williams and the Mets could each benefit from trading the pitcher.
