2 New York Mets who won’t be on the roster July 1
Mets: J.D. Davis should be optioned
In 39 games played this season, Davis has spent 24 of those games as the Mets’ designated hitter. He is hitting .254/.341/.351 with an OPS of .692. He has one home run, six doubles, and one triple, with 17 runs and 12 RBI. He’s walked 12 times, ground into six double plays, and struck out 36 times – that’s a 27.3% strikeout rate.
This is honestly not what you want out of your team’s designated hitter. When he is in the field, he’s played 10 games at third base and three at first base. Davis does not provide a defensive upgrade at either position. Pete Alonso is regularly at first base while Eduardo Escobar is the team’s regular third baseman.
Davis has two minor league options available and will be arbitration-eligible next season – meaning he needs to take some time to work on his hitting and possibly develop at another position. He will be a free agent in 2025.
In order to provide help now, the Mets will find it necessary to make a move, and optioning Davis to the minors should happen. Allow Davis to slow it down and work things out at the minor league level now so that he can be ready for the stretch run.
