3 St. Louis Cardinals trade rumors they should turn into a reality

The St. Louis Cardinals really need some pitching depth but there are some other areas where they can upgrade too.

The St. Louis Cardinals (37-31) are in the thick of the playoff race this year, as they are only one game back of the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead and only 0.5 a game back in the NL Wild Card race entering Tuesday.

Overall, their biggest issue has been injuries as they have suffered injuries in their starting rotation and in their outfield. However, those aren’t the only two areas that they should address before the August 2 trade deadline.

Cardinals trade target: Rockies shortstop José Iglesias

The Colorado Rockies are in the middle of a bridge year and José Iglesias has been the textbook definition of it.

They lost Trevor Story to free agency this past offseason and they are waiting on shortstop prospect Ezequiel Tovar, who is MLB.com’s #100 prospect, raking in Double-A, and already on Colorado’s 40-man roster. He will likely make his MLB debut later this year.

To bridge to Tovar, the Rockies signed Iglesias to a one-year deal this past offseason.

On the season, Iglesias is hitting .299/.343/.371 with an OPS+ of 93. Defensively, he is not the shortstop that he used to be as he already has -6 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) this season.

However, with Iglesias taking over at shortstop, Tommy Edman could play left field while Tyler O’Neill is on the injured list (as he is on it again). When O’Neill returns and if he plays well, Edman could play shortstop more with Iglesias or play all around the diamond, as he has a lot in recent years.
