The Cardinals should trade for Oakland A’s SP Frankie Montas

The starting rotation has been very top-heavy for the St. Louis Cardinals. Miles Mikolas, Adam Wainwright, and Dakota Hudson all have at least 13 starts and an ERA of 3.31 or lower.

However, both of their fourth and fifth starters Steven Matz and Jordan Hicks have struggled (both with ERA’s north of 5.00) and both are currently on the injured list. That’s why the Cardinals are tied for 13th in starting pitcher ERA at 3.79. Oakland A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas could help the Cardinals’ rotation out.

In 2021, Oakland A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas had a very good season. He had a 3.37 ERA and FIP (suggesting his results were very true) in 32 starts. He also had a 1.182 WHIP and a good strikeout-to-walk ratio as he averaged just 2.7 walks per nine innings compared to 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings. He ended up coming in sixth in AL Cy Young Award voting.

He has had similar numbers in 2022 as he has an ERA of 3.53 ERA in an MLB-leading 14 starts. He has a 3.28 FIP and a 1.139 WHIP. His strikeout rate is down a bit as he is averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings but his walk rate is also down to 2.2 walks per nine innings.

The Cardinals might be more interested in Montas than some other starting pitchers on the trade market because they wouldn’t just have him for the remainder of the 2022 season. He is a free agent after the end of the 2023 season so they would also him for next season as well.
