3 players from the 2021 Braves that are failing miserably elsewhere
Left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb (Chicago Cubs)
Of the three players on this list, Sean Newcomb saw the most success and most playing time in the majors with the Atlanta Braves but he has fallen on hard times of late.
Newcomb’s best two seasons came in 2018 and 2019 for the Braves. In 2018, he went 12-9 with a 3.90 ERA (105 ERA+) in 31 games (30 starts). In 2019, he was moved to the bullpen in a long relief role but he had a 3.16 ERA (145 ERA+) in 55 games (four starts).
He struggled with injuries in 2020 and saw his walk rate and ERA skyrocket in 2021. He started out the 2022 season with the Braves but in late April, they traded him to the Chicago Cubs for reliever Jesse Chavez. Chavez has done very well for the Braves (2.19 ERA in 29 games) but Newcomb hasn’t for the Cubs.
He made four appearances in the majors with them and he had a 16.62 ERA. In Triple-A, he has made five appearances and he has an ERA of 9.64. The Cubs designated him for assignment two weeks ago and outrighted him to Triple-A after that so he’s still in Triple-A for the Cubs but not even on their 40-man roster.
