Yankees: 3 players who won’t be on the roster past the trade deadline
By Tim Boyle
3) Albert Abreu will not be on the Yankees roster past the trade deadline
Albert Abreu reunited with the Yankees in a different way than Weber did. First traded to the Yankees from the Houston Astros in the 2016 Brian McCann deal, he was then sent to the Texas Rangers this past April for catcher Jose Trevino. Abreu found a new home in June when Texas dealt him to the Kansas City Royals. Less than three weeks later, the Yankees claimed him off of waivers.
Abreu actually pitched well for New York since his return. In 4.1 innings, he has given up 1 hit and no runs. More of a game finisher in non-save situations, it’s possible he does stick around but not likely.
When looking at guys who may or may not lose their roster spot, the cost is always a major factor. The Yankees didn’t lose anything to acquire him. On a league minimum salary, it’s not a difficult decision to designate him for assignment.
Abreu has bounced around enough this year to even end up in free agency and back with the Yankees on a minor league deal just as Weber did. However, if the ball club does decide to DFA him, he might always get picked up. At 26, he might be worth a gamble. However, with teams already passing on him the last time he was made available by the Royals, how many minds will have changed?
The same way Weber will become a roster casualty because of Yankees roster upgrades, so will Abreu. He’s here to get them through a few weeks. Barring a major bullpen injury, his time in the Bronx should be short-lived.
