Astros: 3 players who won’t be on Houston’s roster past the trade deadline
By Drew Koch
2. Jason Castro will not be on the Astros roster after the trade deadline.
Statistically, this has been Jason Castro’s worse season ever. The 35-year-old is hitting a meager .115/.205/.179. He has just three extra base hits on the season and a .384 OPS. Castro is just not getting done at the dish in 2022.
Houston placed Castro on the 10-day IL with left knee discomfort which in turn resulted in the promotion of rookie catcher Korey Lee. The 23-year-old was just added to Houston’s 40-man roster and will be Martin Maldanado’s backup for at least the next two weeks.
This will be an audition for the young backstop and could very well spell the end of the road for Jason Castro’s time in Houston. Castro is a free agent after this season, but the Astros would be on the hook for the remaining salary owed to the former first-round pick.
The Houston Astros typically favor defense over offense when it comes to their catchers, but when the pair or Maldonado and Castro are both hitting below the Mendoza line, it’s going to be hard to justify keeping both. Castro could be gone by the end of the month.
