3) Guardians outfielder Óscar Mercado

The Cleveland Guardians traded for Óscar Mercado back in 2018 from the St. Louis Cardinals. He was in Triple-A with the Cardinals and hitting .285/.351/.408 in 100 games before he was traded.

It translated to the majors somewhat in his rookie 2019 campaign (96 OPS+ in 115 games) but since, his offense has regressed.

After hitting .202/.227/.377 in 49 games, the Guardians designated him for assignment. The Phillies claimed him, used him for exactly one plate appearance, and then DFA’d him themselves. Cleveland re-signed him and he has played three games in the majors since.

Unlike Palacios, Mercado doesn’t have any minor league options remaining so he would have to be designated for assignment before being sent to the minor leagues. He also could become a free agent. Considering that they have already DFA’d him once, they’ll likely have to do it again if they make moves in the outfield.
