2. Dallas Stars sign F Mason Marchment
Mason Marchment, son of the late Bryan Marchment, had what ultimately ended up being a very short first run in unrestricted free agency, as he has been signed by the Dallas Stars to a four-year, $4.5MM~ contract.
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic was first to report that Marchment was close to signing but his initial reports were that the Carolina Hurricanes were closing in on a deal with the 27-year-old. Instead, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Dallas swooped in and snagged Marchment right from under the Hurricanes.
This past season was the first full season in the NHL for Marchment, as he played in a total of 54 games (18 starts) and scored 47 points (18 goals, 29 assists) in that time. After the acquisition of Claude Giroux last season, the Florida Panthers had to do some shuffling of its forwards to make room for the superstar.
The 2022-23 season will be an interesting one for Marchment as we will get to see whether he’s ready to take the next step in the NHL or if he was just a product of the incredible team around him last year.
