2. Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors: Bears need to get Justin Fields a good backup

This might not be the most obvious candidate to trade for Jimmy G, but it feels as if the Chicago Bears should definitely be in play for such a thing.

Justin Fields is the clear starter as the 2021 first-round pick enters his second season in the NFL. Having said that, with a change at general manager and head coach, the Bears are in a tough spot in terms of their roster talent. To put it bluntly, this might be the worst roster in the NFL entering the 2022 season and Fields, for all of his talent, is going to have to put a lot on his shoulders for a second-year player.

What’s interesting about that, however, is that we could see Fields being asked to improvise and run a bit more than we saw last season as that could be one of their most effective ways to move the ball consistently. With that, however, comes a greater risk of taking hits and, thus, getting injured.

If that were to happen, the backup quarterback in Chicago right now is Trevor Siemian. Even if the Bears aren’t going to win a lot of games this season anyway, they would stand virtually no chance with Siemian at the helm in any relief effort. With Garoppolo, however, they might be in better shape to develop young players on offense and not be a complete dumpster fire should Fields go down.
