3) Mets rumors: David Bednar is an All-Star trade target not named Juan Soto to get

The Mets may not be as in desperate need for starting pitchers at the trade deadline as it appears. Jacob deGrom is supposed to be back. When he does, they’ll have a full rotation with Trevor Williams sticking in the bullpen as their long man and David Peterson likely heading down to Triple-A to stay stretched out.

For this reason, they should pass on trading for any of the All-Star starting pitchers. As appealing as guys like Martin Perez or Luis Castillo could be, it creates a logjam they cannot fix other than to shove one of their other starters into the bullpen. Instead, trading for Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar would be wiser.

The odds of the Pirates trading Bednar are slim but not impossible. He has looked more human in the last few weeks. Could they be tempted to try and capitalize on his success now rather than hope they have a gem in their bullpen?

It would cost a pretty prospect penny to land him for sure even if his ERA does continue to rise ever-so-slightly.

Three other All-Stars the Mets should look into include Ian Happ, C.J. Cron, and Joe Mantiply. Previously covered on Rising Apple, we should fully expect New York to add at least one of these names before the trade deadline.
