2) Mets rumors: Willson Contreras is an All-Star trade target not named Juan Soto to get

There may be more arguments against making the Willson Contreras-Mets rumors come true than for it. The biggest is that there is a major risk that comes with trading for a catcher midseason. It’s hard to disagree with. Despite how poorly the Mets catchers have hit this season, everyone from James McCann to Tomas Nido to Patrick Mazeika has drawn rave reviews from the pitchers.

However, if McCann is going to be on the IL for a long time, the Mets may want to think about making a change. This would involve picking up Contreras from the Chicago Cubs in a blockbuster trade deadline deal.

Contreras wouldn’t necessarily have to be catching everyday either. Because they do have an opening at the DH spot, what’s to stop him from hitting there on a regular basis? The move could be as much about depth as it would be to fill a hole in the lineup. It makes a lot more sense if McCann looks like he’ll be out for a long period of time so the Mets will need to have a good understanding of when they expect him to return from his second IL stint of the year.

There is a possibility that this All-Star catcher ends up being far more affordable than the Cubs would like. There aren’t a whole lot of suitors for him. In fact, Pederson’s Giants are probably one of the better ones aside from the St. Louis Cardinals.

If the Cubs lower the cost for this catching rental, the Mets may want to pounce.
