3) Outfielder Jason Heyward

Jason Heyward has been bad for most of his tenure with the Chicago Cubs. Heyward, who turns 33 in early August, signed an eight-year, $184 million deal prior to the 2016 season so, now, he is in the seventh year of that eight-year contract.

He has spent half of the season on the injured list but when he was healthy, he was hitting .204/.278/.277 with an OPS+ of 57. Much like Simmons, he used to be a great defensive player but he has regressed there as well.

This year, he has -3 DRS in 47 games in the outfield. For comparison, the year before the Cubs signed him (2015), he had 26 DRS with the Cardinals. He also has won five Gold Gloves in his career.

Now, the only reason why he’s on the roster is that he’s got a big contract. He won’t be on the next playoff-contending Cubs team so they need to bite the bullet and let him go in favor of a younger outfielder to see if that player can contribute at an MLB-caliber level.
