3) Texas Rangers missed on Luis Castillo

The Texas Rangers might not be a team that you’d think that would be in on Luis Castillo … but they were. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Rangers were “strongly in the mix” for Castillo before the Mariners got him.

The Rangers entered Friday with a record of 44-54 and eight games back in the AL Wild Card picture after losing seven out of their last 10 games. It is very interesting that the Rangers were, seemingly, the second team in the Luis Castillo sweepstakes since they are that far out of the playoff picture.

However, they must have believed that they could either get back in the playoff race this year or win with Castillo next year. They wouldn’t be the first club with a record that is 10 games under .500 that could possibly be buyers at the trade deadline this year so it will be very interesting to see what develops with the Rangers for the next few days before the deadline lapses at 6 PM E.T. on Tuesday.
