2. The Minnesota Twins will have to give up a lot to get Frankie Montas.

If the Minnesota Twins want to upgrade their starting rotation, and by accounts they do, then it’s going to cost a lot. Frankie Montas is the best pitcher available at this year’s deadline, and after missing out on Luis Castillo, the Twins have to go all-in.

Minnesota already surprised the league by going out and getting Carlos Correa during the offseason. The Twins also signed Bryon Buxton to a massive contract extension and traded their first-round pick in last year’s draft to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Sonny Gray.

But if Gray is the Twins’ Game 1 starter for a potential playoff series then Minnesota will get bounced before they even get off the bus. Adding Frankie Montas should be the No. 1 focus of the Minnesota Twins front office as we’re hurdling toward the August 2nd deadline.

Twins starters ranked 9th in American League with an ERA of 4.20. That’s not going to get it done in October. But the Twins have bigger problems; both the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox are within three games of Minnesota’s slim lead in the AL Central.

There’s going to be a battle for that final Wild Card spot, so the Twins best hope to make the playoffs is to win the division. That starts with acquiring A’s starter Frankie Montas at the deadline.
