These three teams swung and missed on Luis Castillo. They cannot afford to do the same thing with Frankie Montas.

Luis Castillo was dealt to the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Jerry Dipoto pulled off a blockbuster trade and in so doing has several other MLB front office executives throughout the league panicking. With the best starter now off to the Emerald City, all eyes will be on Frankie Montas.

With the Cincinnati Reds bidding farewell to Castillo, the Oakland A’s now control the trade deadline. Starting pitching is always at a premium, but that’s especially true at this year’s deadline.

The additional Wild Card spot means that more teams than ever before are in contention. That’s caused more clubs to be buyers at the trade deadline, and the price for these highly coveted arms is only going up. Which three teams are now in desperation mode and will have to shell out in order to land Montas?

1. The New York Yankees will have to overpay in order to get Frankie Montas.

Brian Cashman reportedly got a little stingy when it came to which prospects he was willing to surrender to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Luis Castillo. Cashman’s insistence to hang on to top shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe likely cost the Yankees the opportunity to secure Castillo’s services.

He can’t make the same mistake again. If the Yankees are to upgrade their starting rotation, Frankie Montas is the answer and the price is going to be high. That doesn’t mean that Volpe needs to be part of the deal, but it’s going to require several top prospects.

The Yankees have the means to get this deal done. Whether it’s Oswald Peraza, Jasson Dominguez, Ken Waldichuk, or a combination of the three, Cashman can’t afford to mess this up.

The New York Yankees are in contention to be the favorites to win this year’s World Series, but the Houston Astros stand in their way. The Yankees will inevitably have to shell out in order to upgrade their rotation or they may miss out on the Fall Classic once again.
