Austin Romine to be pushed out with Molina’s return

With Andrew Knizner stepping up his hitting game over the last several weeks and Yadier Molina due to return from an injured list stint that has him on a rehab assignment this weekend, Romine’s services will no longer be needed on the Cardinals roster.

Romine proved to be a disappointment as he was merely a stop-gap catching option and a further issue when he wasn’t able to travel with the Cardinals to Toronto last week due to his vaccination status. While it was his choice to not be vaccinated, he couldn’t help his team that could have used his depth.

Ivan Herrera, who has been considered Molina’s heir apparent, got the call instead. While they used Knizer in both games in Toronto, Herrera was able to prove a good teammate and be there for them. While Herrera still has some growing to accomplish at the plate, he has made a good impression.

Considering all of this, when Molina returns next week, expect Romine to no longer be on the Cardinals roster.
