T.J. McFarland could be on his way out

The Cardinals just acquired JoJo Romero in a deal for Edmundo Sosa,  While Romero was optioned to AAA Memphis, Paul DeJong was promoted from Memphis after impressing with his comeback effort. That said, it will be curious to see how much longer McFarland remains on the roster.

After being so impressive at times last season, he has really struggled since signing with the Cardinals in the off-season. McFarland, 33, has 30 innings pitched through 27 games with a 6.60 ERA and a BABIP of 3.47. While he has a 53.8% ground ball rate, over those 30 innings he’s given up 39 hits, 24 runs with 22 earned runs, and four home runs.

Romero adds depth in the minor league with the potential to contribute to the majors down the road. He allows for some flexibility as the Cardinals seek to improve their rotation and bullpen. He allows for the Cardinals to find an improvement over McFarland and a struggling bullpen.
