3. The Cubs could sign Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner.

If there’s one shortstop who’s going to get paid this offseason, it’s Los Angeles’ Trea Turner. There’s no opt-out in Turner’s deal, so he’ll be a free agent with no questions asked. Will Jed Hoyer push all his chips in and land the top free agent in this year’s class outside of Aaron Judge?

Turner will land a deal similar to what Corey Seager signed last season. The former Dodgers’ shortstop inked a 10-year/$325M contract with the Texas Rangers, so if the Chicago Cubs want Trea Turner as part of their infield, that’s the number to beat.

Turner will be tough to pry away from the Dodgers. LA, however, has received solid production from former shortstop prospect Gavin Lux this season. Last year, with both Seager and Turner on the same field, Turner occupied second base.

The Dodgers have done the same with Turner and Lux this season and with talented infield prospects like Miguel Vargas and Michael Busch ready to debut in 2023, perhaps Los Angeles does not enter the bidding war for Turner’s services.

No matter who the Chicago Cubs settle on to be their shortstop heading into next season, the fanbase will wholeheartedly agree that it can’t be Nico Hoerner. Look for Jed Hoyer and the Cubs to make a splash in the offseason and land one of these top free agent shortstops.
