3. Royals manager Mike Matheny

Mike Matheny is in his third season as the manager of the Kansas City Royals. When he was hired, the club was in the middle of a rebuild with some prospects on the way so it was easy to give him a pass on 2020 and 2021, especially with the 2020 season only being 60 games.

In 2021, they improved to 74-88 season after their 70-win pace in 2020 so this year, they should have improved further. After all, infielder Bobby Witt Jr. (who was the top prospect in the entire sport), catcher MJ Melendez (No. 51 overall prospect entering the season according to MLB), and first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino (who wasn’t on MLB’s Top 100 list to start the season but got all the way up to No. 60 before graduating from the list recently) are all on the MLB team.

The club also has a young pitching core. Nearly everyone has regressed. That’s why the club is on pace to lose 97 games this season.

The Royals obviously blame the coaching staff somewhat since they fired hitting coach Terry Bradshaw (no, not the NFL Hall of Fame QB from the Pittsburgh Steelers) in mid-May so things may be changing in Kansas City after the season ends with Mike Matheny and the managerial chair.
