Steelers surprise cuts: G Kendrick Green

Don’t come after me with torches just yet — I know you’re all thinking it.

Green is a former third-round pick, so I want to preface the following by admitting it’s very, very unlikely that he’s outright cut. However, his play in the preseason could justify it.

Green struggled mightily at center last year, and reports of him being the next great Steelers offensive lineman are greatly exaggerated. He couldn’t handle playing with Ben Freaking Roethlisberger. How’s he supposed to protect Kenny Pickett or Mitchell Trubisky?

His move back to a natural position, guard, hasn’t gone well either. At a certain point, isn’t it fair to cut bait? Yes, Pittsburgh would have to eat money. And, yes, they run the risk of another team picking Green up due to his natural talent. But leaving the potential future face of the franchise at risk is a chance the Steelers cannot take.

John Leglue could easily fill his roster spot, and while he’s no show-stopper, could at the very least provide some capable filler. Canada can try to move the pocket as much as he wants to mask poor offensive line play, but at some point Green has to be held accountable.

A practice squad move, or demotion to the bench, is far more likely. But if we know Pittsburgh’s front office, they aren’t as patient as the rest of us.
