2. Trading for Frankie Montas

The Yankees did address their starting rotation by trading for Oakland A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas a few days before the trade deadline.

He was pitching really well with the A’s. In 19 starts with them, he has a 3.18 ERA, a 3.35 FIP, a 1.137 WHIP, and an average of 2.4 walks and 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2021, he finished sixth in the AL Cy Young Award voting.

Since he joined the Yankees, he has made three starts and he has an ERA of 9.00. He also had a 5.54 FIP, a 1.714 WHIP, and an average of 11.6 hits, 3.9 walks, and 5.1 strikeouts per nine innings. All three of those numbers are significantly worse than they were with the A’s. The Yankees needed starting rotation help and even with addressing it at the trade deadline, it has gotten worse.

In essence, they switched out Jordan Montgomery for Montas. Montgomery has been the best starter in baseball and Montas has been one of the worst. Not getting Pablo López further exacerbated the issue.
