3. Trading Joey Gallo away

In all fairness, the Yankees had (and I mean absolutely had) to trade Joey Gallo away. There are no two ways to analyze it: He was awful for them.

For the Yankees, he was hitting .159/.282/.339 with 12 home runs, 24 RBI, four doubles, a triple, and an OPS+ of 78 in 82 games. In 12 games with the Dodgers, he already has three home runs, five RBI, a double, a triple, a slash line of .267/.371/.667, and an OPS+ of 180.

Since they traded him to the Dodgers on August 2, the Yankees are 5-14. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are the exact opposite as they are 15-4.

His replacement was Andrew Benintendi, who was an All-Star for Kansas City this year. Since he joined the Yankees, Benintendi has played in 24 games and he is hitting .228/.340/.392 with an OPS+ of 111. He has been much better recently so by no means has he been bad but the Dodgers have been able to fix Gallo’s swing where the Yankees were not able to.
