Projected AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 1: No. 20-19

20. Kentucky Wildcats

Even though the team has been rocked by suspensions leading up to Week 1 and was having to face a Miami-Ohio team that’s far from a pushover, you have to tip your cap to Mark Stoops’ team for the job that they did on the field on Saturday in Lexington.

Will Levis, he of banana-with-the-peel eating and mayo-in-his-coffee fam, showed again that he’s more than just a sideshow. He led the way by going 21-of-32 for 303 yards with three scores and an interception.

Kentucky is going to be a nuisance in the SEC as they have been so often in recent years, particularly when they get the likes of Chris Rodriguez Jr. back from suspension. This wasn’t their A-game performance to open the year, but that was to be expected with the number of players they had sitting out.

19. Oregon Ducks

Yes, Oregon lost to the No. 3-ranked team in the country. That alone shouldn’t drop them eight spots from the No. 11 spot. But the way that the Ducks lost sure as hell warrants that type of fall in the rankings.

Bo Nix looked horrendous against a top-tier defense, even one that is replacing a boatload of NFL Draft picks from last year’s team. He couldn’t get anything going and looked out of his depth. Even worse, though, Dan Lanning’s defense, which is supposed to be a strength for Oregon, looked slow in comparison to the Bulldogs and had no answers almost from start to finish in the game.

Oregon has time to turn things around moving forward, but this was about as bad of a start in a high-profile game as you could imagine.
