College football rankings 2022: Projected Week 2 AP Top 25 after Ohio State outlasts Notre Dame, Georgia dismantles Oregon

Projecting the AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 1 with Ohio State passing the test against Notre Dame and Georgia blowing out Oregon. 

College football has finally arrived in its full form and, my god, is it beautiful.

You want an upset? Well, let me direct your attention to Gainesville where unranked Florida knocked off the No. 7-ranked Utah Utes in the season-opener. You want wild drama? The state of North Carolina had you covered with UNC-App State and NC State-East Carolina both delivering in-state rivalries and wild finishes. And that’s without mentioning the biggest games of the day with Georgia and Oregon going head-to-head as Ohio State and Notre Dame did the same.

So now that we’re through the first Saturday of the season, let’s take a look at the projected AP Top 25 college football rankings to see what got shaken up after the bulk of the Week 1 action.

Projected AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 1: No. 25-21

25. Houston Cougars

UTSA gave Houston everything they could handle and more. The Cougars had to come back from an early two-touchdown deficit against the Roadrunners to ultimately miss a field goal after they tied the game and go into overtime. After trading blows, Clayton Tune came up clutch to get the 37-35 win. For a team threatening to be a force in the Group of 5, though, this was a huge gut-check test that they passed.

24. Florida Gators

Any questions about Napier and the Gators now? After opening the season outside of the preseason AP Top 25, Florida welcomed the No. 7-ranked Utah Utes to town and put on a fantastic show in an upset victory that they captured, 29-26. Anthony Richardson lived up to the hype as an electric playmaker and Florida is going to be a factor in the SEC East, it seems.

23. BYU Cougars

Some people questioned how BYU would fair as they traveled across the country to a muggy Tampa to play South Florida but Jaren Hall and the Cougars looked wholly unbothered. BYU hung 50 points on the Bulls after waiting out a lightning delay that pushed kickoff back over two hours. The Cougs could be a sneaky dominant force again and they have a schedule that could allow them to shake things up in a massive way.

22. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Even with the unfortunate and sad medical new about Sam Hartman that has him out to start the season, Wake Forest made quick work of VMI to open the season on Thursday. The Demon Deacs cruised to a 44-10 win over the Keydets in which the offense still hummed without the star at quarterback. Of course, we’ll have to see how things transpire against better competition in the coming weeks.

21. Ole Miss Rebels

While Troy is expected to be a quality Group of 5 team this season, you can’t imagine that Lane Kiffin was happy with the season-opener as the Rebels only came away with a 28-10 win. Jaxson Dart was up and down throughout the night, though Zach Evans was the playmaker Ole Miss fans were hoping for. Hopefully, the arrow trends up for this team for the sake of overall sanity in Oxford this season.
