Ohio State football quarterback C.J. Stroud explained his scrambling mindset in the perfect way to pump up Buckeyes fans.

C.J. Stroud led Ohio State to a victory Notre Dame in the season opener to put the Buckeyes one step closer to the College Football Playoff.

It wasn’t always pretty but the quarterback made sure the loss of star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to an injury didn’t totally sink the offense.

It took quite a bit of scrambling. That’s not a problem for Stroud.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud embraces scramble

After the game, Stroud was asked about how much he was willing to scramble to keep plays alive. He had the perfect answer.

“I’m willing to put my head on the chopping board for this team to get a win,” Stroud said, per Griffin Strom of Eleven Warriors.

All fans want a quarterback with that kind of mentality. Being willing to put your body on the line matters. It can be the difference between a first down and punt or win and a loss.

Of course, there’s a limit to that.

Buckeyes fans should love the mindset. They should also hope he doesn’t literally put his head on the chopping block too often. Toughness matters. So does availability. And the worst thing a quarterback can do is to end up injured because he took too many risks and put himself in harm’s way.

It’s a fine line to walk. The best quarterbacks find a way to walk it. Stroud has the potential to be one of those guys. He’ll have to be if he wants to contend for the Heisman and a national title.

After Saturday, the Buckeyes have one win down and a bunch more to go.
