3) Braves won’t be able to count on Ian Anderson in this year’s postseason

A postseason hero for Atlanta last year, Ian Anderson has been spending a lot of the 2022 season in the minor leagues. Having a 5.00 ERA in 22 starts will do that to even the most promising of young pitchers. The addition of Jake Odorizzi at the trade deadline pushes Anderson further back on the starting pitcher depth chart. Add in how much more effective Charlie Morton has been in recent weeks and it’s hard to see any possibility of Anderson joining the ball club in the playoffs.

Anderson would only be a candidate to ride with the Braves in this year’s playoffs if the team had some bigger holes in the bullpen. He wouldn’t be such a bad choice to give them multiple innings in relief. However, because other guys are getting the job done, the transition from starter to reliever wouldn’t be the wisest decision.

Anderson got a World Series ring last year and deserved it. If Atlanta can win again in 2022, he’ll get yet another piece of jewelry. This one might feel more like a participation trophy from afar than anything else.

Any run the Braves make in the postseason this year shouldn’t include Anderson. He just wasn’t good enough in the opportunities they gave him.
