Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols were the first ones there to cheer on Juan Yepez after his go-ahead pinch-hit home run in his first playoff appearance.
The MLB playoffs are home to magical moments and it didn’t take long for this year’s postseason to deliver something special.
On Friday during Game 1 of the NL Wildcard series between the Cardinals and the Phillies, an unexpected hero emerged.
Rookie Juan Yepez came to the plate as a designated hitter in a 0-0 game in the seventh inning. He smashed a two-run home run on his first swing.

Yepez gave the Cardinals a lead, becoming the first player in STL postseason history to pinch-hit a go-ahead postseason home run. He’s only the second player in history to hit a pinch-hit home run in a 0-0 game in the seventh inning or later.
No one loved to see it more than Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina.
It’s awesome to see the enthusiasm from two veterans on the verge of retirement. They’re literally cheering on the next generation of Cardinals like Yepez, who got his first chance to put his mark on St. Louis baseball history.
