Tennessee’s demolition of LSU in Death Valley grabbed the undivided attention of college football fans everywhere.

Don’t look now, but the Tennessee Volunteers have the making of a College Football Playoff team at roughly the midway point of the regular season.

No. 8 Tennessee went into Death Valley and handed No. 25 LSU a brutal 40-13 home loss. The Vols improved to 5-0 on the year, taking their perfect record into the Third Saturday in October next week. Although No. 1 Alabama looms large, the Vols have shown enough people that they might have a chance in this cross-divisional rivalry game. A win in Knoxville will speak volumes.

If Tennessee looks anything like it did vs. LSU when it takes on Alabama, good luck with that!

Tennessee has huge statement win over LSU ahead of Third Saturday in October

This might only be Josh Heupel’s second season leading Rocky Top, but his offense appears to be among the most explosive in the SEC, and arguably in the entire country.

With quarterback Hendon Hooker playing like a serious Heisman Trophy contender, the Vols are showing they can put up points with the best of them this season.

Assuming the defense continues to improve, and it just might be the Vols heading to Atlanta over the likes of Georgia and Kentucky out of the SEC East this year.

Even if the Volunteers are not on Alabama’s level just yet, they can still probably get to Atlanta if they complete the sweep over the ‘Cats and the Dawgs. Having the head-to-head tiebreaker over fellow divisional contenders will be huge for Rocky Top. However, we do have to remember this is Brian Kelly’s first season in Baton Rouge. LSU is not Alabama, Georgia or even Kentucky just yet.

The best thing the Vols can do is keep being themselves and rack up one big win after another.
