The Pittsburgh Steelers got blown out by the Buffalo Bills in Week 5. These three individuals did not do themselves any favors.

The Pittsburgh Steelers started off their season on a high — defeating the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals in overtime. Since then, the team lost to the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets. The Steelers did try to change their luck by benching quarterback Mitch Trubisky for rookie Kenny Pickett against the Jets and gave him his first career start in Week 5. The problem was, it was against the Buffalo Bills.

In Week 5, the Steelers found themselves down 31-3 entering halftime. They watched as quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Gabriel Davis put up video game numbers on their defense, while the offense could not do anything of substance.

When it comes to the game, there are three members of the team that did not do themselves any favors.

3. Teryl Austin, DC

Pittsburgh’s defense took a massive hit when outside linebacker T.J. Watt left the game with what was determined to be a torn pectoral muscle. Losing the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is always going to be tough, but it is up to the coaching staff and players to step up in his absence.

The Steelers defense has not.

Against Buffalo, they could not get to Allen, defend the pass, or stop the run.

With the team struggling, it is on the defensive coaching staff. It is on Teryl Austin to get the most out of his players. There are no excuses. Look at what Don “Wink” Martindale is doing with a New York Giants defense with a less-than-stellar roster.

If head coach Mike Tomlin wants to make some changes to his coaching staff, let’s not forget that he has a former head coach Brian Flores coaching the linebackers. Flores did a great job with the Miami Dolphins defense in his years as their head coach. He could be an easy pivot to defensive coordinator.
