Braves get lucky with Ronald Acuña injury update

Ronald Acuña suffered an injury on Wednesday night that looked like it had the potential to be bad for the Atlanta Braves.

On Wednesday night, Atlanta Braves fans held their breath for several minutes after Ronald Acuna Jr. took a pitch on his elbow and was treated and consulted by the medical team.

It ended up being the turning point in the game, but no fan or member of the Braves would have wanted to pay Acuna’s health and availability as a cost for that win, even if it meant going down 2-0 in the series to the Philadelphia Phillies.

After Zack Wheeler hit Acuna and there was an extended break, the Braves would rally for three runs — the only three scored in the game — in the bottom of the sixth.

He came back to the field in the top of the 7th and did close the game, but fans and the team still waited with bated breath for reports on the extent of the injury postgame.

Their patience was rewarded with good news:

Phew. You can breathe, Braves fans. Not only did the team grab a win to tie the best-of-five series 1-1 going into Game 3, but your leadoff man is healthy.

The injury was likely bad optically because it could have hit Acuna right in a funky spot on the elbow causing numbness throughout his arm. The pitch he took was a 96 mph fastball.

After the game, through an interpreter, he said there was no way he was going out.

The Braves got a little lucky in other ways, too. A rain delay turned the day game into a night game. The Braves have struggled this year during day games. Game 3 is scheduled for 4:37 pm ET on Friday in Philadelphia.
