Can Oregon make the College Football Playoff despite blowout loss to Georgia?
By Scott Rogust
The Oregon Ducks rose up to No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. But do they have a shot at making it to the semifinals?
The Oregon Ducks’ 2022 season didn’t get off to the most ideal start. Facing off against the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta, Oregon was held to just three points, and lost 49-3. But ever since, the Ducks have been on a roll, winning their next eight games on the schedule.
Following their Week 10 win over Colorado, and with 10 ranked teams losing, the Ducks have climbed up to the sixth spot in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. So, they are on the outside looking in of a Playoff spot.
Do the Ducks have a shot at making it?
Does Oregon actually have a shot at making the College Football Playoff?
There is a slim chance of Oregon clinching a Playoff spot, but it is possible.
The most pivotal thing that the Ducks can do is win their remaining three regular-season games on the schedule. They’re not necessarily easy either, as they face No. 25 Washington and No. 13 Utah in the next two weeks, before closing out the regular season against Oregon State.
From there, they will have to win the Pac-12 Championship Game, which would come against the other team ranked in the top two spots of the conference standings.
Even if Oregon does all of that, they’ll need some help.
First things first, they will need the TCU Horned Frogs to lose one of their remaining games this regular season. TCU plays No. 18 Texas, Baylor, and Iowa State in their remaining three games.
Then, Oregon’s shot could all depend on the result of the Ohio State-Michigan game to end the season. Both teams are undefeated, and the winner could knock the loser out of Playoff contention.
To make things a little bit easier if the LSU Tigers, who are ranked seventh, were to lose a game. Whether that is as soon as Week 11 against Arkansas, or in the SEC title game against Georgia.
It may not be necessary, but another Tennessee loss could really help Oregon. But we must stress that seems highly unlikely, considering they will play Missouri, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt to close out their campaign.
Long story short, there’s a path to the Playoff for Oregon, but they need help along the way.
