Projected College Football Playoff rankings after Week 12: No. 18-17

18. North Carolina Tar Heels

Despite being slotted at No. 13 in the last College Football Playoff rankings, UNC was still theoretically alive if they could win out. Victories in the regular-season finale over NC State and in the ACC Championship Game of Clemson would’ve been huge for the resumé of the Tar Heels. Everyone was overlooking this week’s matchup against Georgia Tech and, frankly, that seems like it included Mack Brown.

Drake Maye and the Heels jumped out to a 17-0 lead and seemed to be on the verge of running away with a comfortable victory before the two big games at the end of the rainbow. But thereafter, the offense completely stalled, the porous defense showed up and the Yellow Jackets clawed their way back in. North Carolina had its chances but left them on the table and, ultimately, took a 21-17 loss in shocking fashion, thus ending their slim Playoff hopes.

17. Tulane Green Wave

The one ranked team that didn’t play on Saturday but, rather, took the field on Thursday night, Tulane is looking more and more like it could end up once again as the best Group of 5 team when it’s all said and done this season. After taking the tough loss to UCF on the chin, they stayed at home to host SMU and gave the high-powered Mustangs a taste of their own medicine as they hung 59 points on them in a highly one-sided victory.

Tulane’s chances of being the best G5 team when the season ends really all rests on next week and an enormous clash against Cincinnati. The Bearcats have been surging as of late and, outside of quarterback, have a complete roster. But the Green Wave has been up to the task far more often than not this season, so that will be one of the more underrated matchups to watch next week.
