France will begin their World Cup title defense on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when they take on Australia at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar. Here’s how to watch.
Defending World Cup champion France will play Australia on Tuesday at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar.
Les Bleus face an uphill climb since winning back-to-back World Cups has not been done since Brazil did it 1958 and ’62.
It doesn’t end there. The team has been plagued by injuries and will have to deal with the absences of, most notably, midfielders N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba. This past weekend, the team lost striker Karim Benzema, who recently won the Ballon d’Or and helped Real Madrid win the Champions League, to injury in training.

The team does feature Kylian Mbappe, one of the best players on the planet, alongside Olivier Giroud, who could start now that Benzema is sidelined.
Although they are the seeded side in Group D, France must also have to deal with the fact that the last three defending champions (Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and Germany four years ago) have exited in the group stage.
Despite all this adversity, Australia are not a very good side, qualifying for the finals via a playoff match against Peru. Nonetheless, they could attempt to snag a point given France’s depleted lineup.
