Last year, the St. Louis Cardinals were linked to Scherzer once he became a free agent. He was, after all, from the st. Louis area. Ultimately, Scherzer chose to sign a massive three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets.
What if the Cardinals were to take one of New York’s top starting pitchers?
This past year, the Cardinals rode a wave of momentum in the second half of the season into a postseason berth. They made the savvy trades for Jordan Montgomery and Jose Quintana at the trade deadline. However, St. Louis was swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card Series.
The offseason has already been kind to the Cardinals, as third baseman Nolan Arenado opted into his contract with the team, and Adam Wainwright is returning for one more season. But, they do need to find a replacement at catcher for Yadier Molina, which should be a top priority for the team. Other than that, they can stand to add another pitcher.
Given how they fell short of expectations, adding deGrom shows that the team could be “all-in” on a World Series run.
