Qatar is the first team eliminated from the 2022 World Cup and the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage since 2010.

The first middle-eastern nation to host the World Cup in 90+ years, Qatar was not a favorite to advance out of the group stage but there was hope among supporters that they would put up a fight.

Instead, the hosts are the first team eliminated from contention.

After opening up the tournament with a 2-0 defeat against Ecuador, Qatar’s second match put them up against a Senegal side without its best player Sadio Mané due to injury. That didn’t matter, however, as the Senegalese team put three in the back of the net to cruise to a 3-1 victory. Then, with Netherlands and Ecuador playing to a draw in the next match, Qatar was mathematically eliminated from advancing to the knockout stage.

With this elimination, Qatar becomes the first host nation to not make it out of the group stage since South Africa in 2010. Prior to that, it was Spain in 1982 in the second group stage of a previous format since the host country had not made it to the knockout stage.

Having said that, the success of host countries in the World Cup has been relative over the years. There hasn’t been a host country to become champions since France in 1998 and Argentina in 1978 were the last one’s to accomplish that feat prior to that.

And alas, Qatar now makes it at least another four years before we will see a host nation have a chance to become champions with their exit, though they will have one more match against Netherlands on Nov. 29.
