2. Hudson Card could be a better Hendon Hooker replacement for Tennessee than Joe Milton

Few examples of quarterback development in college football are better than what Josh Heupel did with Hendon Hooker at Tennessee. Hooker went from a guy who was unable to secure the starting job at Virginia Tech to a bonafide Heisman candidate this past season. But the 2022 campaign was also Hooker’s last in the collegiate ranks.

Some might say that the Vols already have their successor on the roster with Michigan transfer Joe Milton. And it’s also worth noting that 5-star recruit Nico Iamaleava is set to arrive next season. Milton, however, has still not proven he can be a successful starting quarterback in the SEC as his accuracy and touch remain in question. As for Iamaleava, he could take time to develop as an incoming freshman.

That could pave the way for Card to be a stopgap option in Knoxville. We know that he would develop and put up numbers in the high-octane Tennessee offense and that Heupel could very well look to someone with his talent to step into Hooker’s shoes. The only question would be if he Card would want to go to a place where a young 5-star could usurp him in 2024.

1. Notre Dame needs to jump all over Hudson Card to salvage the offense

After getting a ton of heat for the inauspicious start that Notre Dame got off to in his first season as head coach, Marcus Freeman deserves a ton of credit for righting the ship in South Bend in-season and getting the Fighting Irish to a Top 25 finish in the regular season.

That can be true at the same time it’s also true that Notre Dame needs to find another option at quarterback. Put simply, the offense was dreadful in most instances when the Irish played a defense with a pulse and a big reason was the lack of threatening with the passing game under Drew Pyne.

Notre Dame always has solid weapons in the passing attack but they need to find stability at quarterback. Hudson Card would offer them that with far more proven work on the field than anything Pyne or Tyler Buchner showed this season. And for a program that expects to be competing for College Football Playoff berths, Card offers them the best chance of the three to get to that spot.
