Michigan gets horrible injury news ahead of Big Ten Championship

The Michigan Wolverines will be without arguably their best player on offense for the remainder of their season.

The Michigan Wolverines are in the Big Ten Championship Game for the second year in a row, by way of soundly defeating the rival Ohio State Buckeyes. Now, they look to defeat the Purdue Boilermakers in the conference title game, with a win all but confirming that Michigan will once again be in the College Football Playoff.

But, they won’t have their star player on offense.

According to NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport, running back Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of Michigan’s season. Corum is expected to make a full recovery.

Corum had been dealing with a left knee injury since Week 12 when Michigan played the Illinois Fighting Illini. In the first half, Corum ran towards the sideline and got his left leg wrapped up by a defender, and he clutched his left knee when falling to the football field. Corum did return for the second half briefly before being removed from the game.

In Michigan’s 45-23 win over Ohio State, Corum played in the opening drive, taking two carries for six yards. He never returned to the game after that.

Corum ends his season with 1,463 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns on 247 carries to his credit.

While Corum’s absence will sting for Michigan, they did have players step up in his absence.

Running back Donovan Edwards ran all over Ohio State’s defense, including two long touchdown runs (75- and 85-yards) in the fourth quarter. Overall, Edwards ran for 216 yards on 22 carries.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw three huge touchdown passes against Ohio State, while accumulating 263 passing yards on 12 completions (24 attempts).

Corum had a Heisman-caliber season in his junior year. Unfortunately, a late left knee injury brought an end to what was a stellar campaign.
