Heisman Trophy Power Rankings: Max Duggan punches his ticket to NYC
By Scott Rogust
It looked as though Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud may have played in his last game for the team last week in their blowout loss to Michigan. He did, after all, throw two interceptions and was unable to put additional point son the scoreboard in the second half against the Wolverines.
One week later, Ohio State is likely College Football Playoff bound. With one loss on the year, they needed some of the top four teams to lose. They got just that with USC’s loss to Utah on Friday and TCU’s defeat against Kansas State on Saturday. With these results, the Buckeyes have great odds in playing in the CFP semifinals. That gives Stroud another chance to showcase his talent, especially if he declares for the NFL Draft.
On the year, Stroud threw for 3,340 yards, 37 touchdowns (tied for most in nation) and six interceptions while completing 66.2-percent of his passes.
Caleb Williams, despite USC’s loss to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game, remains the favorite to hoist the Heisman Trophy in New York City.
Williams had some impressive plays, such as his long run after stiff-arming an Utah defender. He fell short of the end zone, and as it turns out, he actually “popped” his hamstring, per USC head coach Lincoln Riley.
In the 47-24 loss, Williams recorded 363 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and one interception while completing 28-of-41 passes.
On the year, Williams threw for 4,075 yards, 37 touchdowns, and four interceptions, while running for 372 yards and 10 touchdowns on 109 carries.
The Trojans may have fallen short of the College Football Playoff, but they had an incredible first season with Riley and Williams. The quarterback transfer showed that not only is he a Heisman favorite, but also a favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
When all is said and done, Williams is probably being announced as the 2022 Heisman trophy winner in New York City on Dec. 10.
