College Football Playoff National Championship Game Matchup No. 1: Ohio State vs Michigan

This has to be the best possible matchup for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. No, these aren’t the two best teams in the country. No, it isn’t the most likely game that we’re going to see in Inglewood on Jan. 9. But in terms of just pure spectacle, perhaps the two most bitter rivals in college football dueling for a title would be unheard of amounts of drama.

We saw something similar to this just earlier in 2022 during March Madness with UNC and Duke battling it out in the first-ever Final Four matchup between the two arch-rivals. Granted, the stakes for that were even higher with it eventually being Coach K’s final game, but the atmosphere for a rivalry matchup of this magnitude when the stakes are raised even higher than normal is something that can’t be comprehended.

Yes, there’s no doubt that Michigan thoroughly dominated Ohio State in the regular-season finale between these two, doing so for the second straight year. They punched the Buckeyes in the mouth repeatedly until they couldn’t get off the mat. But now Ryan Day would have more than a month to adjust and figure out how to change things up to not let that happen again. Similarly, Jim Harbaugh would have the same time to develop another way to attack the Buckeyes with J.J. McCarthy, Donovan Edwards and his defense.

An Ohio State-Michigan game for the national championship is Hollywood-ending type of stuff. It would be almost too surreal to believe it was happening. However, it’s a very real possibility. And there’s no way it can’t be ranked as the best possible matchup from the final four teams in college football.
