3 Yankees moves to still make even after signing Carlos Rodon No. 2: Trade Gleyber Torres

For Yankees fans, they probably wish that one of the moves the team makes is to move on from third baseman Josh Donaldson. Given how positively that general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone have spoken about him and how he should have been a finalist for a Gold Glove, it’s probably not happening. Not just that, but he’s due $21 million for next season. Not team is taking on the contract unless the Yankees throw in a prospect.

One move that they could make is to trade second baseman Gleyber Torres.

After arriving from the Chicago Cubs in the Aroldis Chapman trade in 2016, Torres was hyped up as the next great prospect . He had one very good year with the Yankees in 2019, where he posted 38 home runs, 90 RBI, a .278 batting average, and a .871 OPS. He hasn’t replicated that kind of season since.

Torres can put up decent numbers at the plate, but his defense in the middle infield is hit-and-miss. The thing is, the Yankees have two top shortstop prospects in Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Realistically, if they both impress at spring training, they could man the middle infield for year’s to come. Not to mention, D.J. LeMahieu could very well return to second base when he’s healthy for next season. Oh, and Oswaldo Cabrera can play a variety of positions, including infield and outfield.

The Yankees have received interest from other teams regarding Torres. He was part of a reported trade with the Miami Marlins for pitcher Pablo Lopez and infielder Miguel Rojas, but the deal fell through. This offseason, the Seattle Mariners were reportedly interested in Torres. Given the young prospects they have, the Yankees should explore a trade for Torres to see if they can get a player (or players) in return to help the team out.
