3 NFL QBs who deserve to be benched after Week 16, No. 1: Zach Wilson, New York Jets
There is really no debate as to which quarterback played the worst in Week 16. That was undoubtedly Zach Wilson of the New York Jets.
Wilson was already benched once for Mike White, as the offense was much more productive with him at the helm. But, Wilson found his way back into the starting lineup after White suffered multiple broke ribs against the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. He had the chance to prove himself at home in primetime against Trevor Lawrence, who the Jets could have drafted had head coach Adam Gase not won two games late in the 2020 season.
The 2021 second-overall pick gave the Jets faithful packed in a rainy MetLife Stadium plenty to boo. The offense looked lifeless with Wilson at the helm. Like Mike Glennon-Jake Fromm on the 2021 New York Giants level of bad. With each incomplete pass, the crowd booed loudly, and chanted for practice squad quarterback Chris Streveler. In fact, Streveler entered the game in the second half, and he got the offense moving. Unlike Wilson.
Yes, it’s less than two years into Wilson’s tenure at head coach, but Week 16 felt like the end of his time with the team. In fact, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer said on Saturday that the team “lost all confidence” in Wilson, and they expect to move on from him after the season.
Wilson impressed during his final year at BYU and during the pre-draft process, but he just hasn’t been able to play that exact same way in the NFL. Maybe he’ll be able to turn things around on a new NFL team.
