Josh Jacobs rumors: Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins went all-in to trade for wide receiver Tyreek Hill last offseason, and he has paired nicely with Jaylen Waddle this season. But the run game has been more inconsistent and a work in progress, as head coach Mike McDaniel has leaned into his 49ers’ roots with backs that were familiar with that system (Raheem Mostert in free agency, the trade for Jeff Wilson). With two games to go, Miami has the league’s 27th-ranked rushing attack (95.9 yards per game).

Miami is certainly going to be somewhere in the market for a running back this offseason. No running backs on their current depth chart–Mostert, Wilson, Salvon Ahmed, Myles Gaskin–are under contract for next year. So there’s an opportunity to completely rebuild that depth chart, even with one (or more) of the aforementioned guys back.

Warm weather and no state income tax in Florida would only add to Miami’s appeal as a free agency destination for Jacobs. It will come down to that interest being mutual, and if McDaniel views running backs like his former boss Kyle Shanahan does–which is to say (shy of someone like Christian McCaffrey) they’re pretty interchangeable, replaceable, etc. Investing in a lead back like Jacobs would not fit a Shanahan-influenced template.

But Jacobs would surely be interested in Miami, and they will have a need/possible desire to notably upgrade their RB1 spot. This would be a good match.
