Pete Golding just ruined the holiday season for Alabama fans
Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding said he expects to remain in Tuscaloosa for next year, which isn’t music to the ears of many Crimson Tide fans.
Alabama’s defense allowed just 18 points per game in 2022, but after watching the Crimson Tide concede 52 points to Tennessee and 32 points to LSU in losses, fans have seen enough from defensive coordinator Pete Golding.
“Fire Pete Golding” became a regular utterance on message boards and at Bryant Denny Stadium all year. Those three words may have to hold over in 2023, along with the DC.
When asked about his future with the Crimson Tide, Golding told reporters that he has no plans to leave Alabama. He’s under contract, so he expects to be back.
For many Alabama fans, that’s bad news.
Sorry fans, Pete Golding intends to remain as Alabama’s DC in 2023
Of course, it’s not Golding’s decision whether he stays Alabama’s DC. If Nick Saban wanted him gone, he’d be gone.
However, it doesn’t sound like Saban is looking to make a change at defensive coordinator if he can help it.
Fans can’t even pin their hopes on a promotion taking Golding away from Tuscaloosa.
“I’m not in a hurry to be a head coach,” Golding also said.
Why is Golding so unpopular? He became DC for the Tide in 2018 after years of fans growing accustomed to defenses that were practically impossible to break down. While his defenses have put up decent season-long statistics, their performance in losses has been miserable.
Alabama has lost seven games since Golding took over. Each of those featured the defense giving up 30 or more points. Two of those losses were in national title games against Clemson and Georgia. Five of the seven saw the opponent score more than 40 points.
