The link to Hamlin’s GoFundMe “The Chasing M’s Foundation Community Toy Drive” quickly spread around social media. Rival fans called for donations and they came in quickly.
The goal for the drive was $2,500. It was up to more than $730,000 with more than 30,000 donors by 10:45 p.m. ET. It was rising every minute.
In a terrible situation, fans came together to do a beautiful thing.
“As I embark on my journey to the NFL, I will never forget where I come from and I am committed to using my platform to positively impact the community that raised me,” Hamlin wrote in the information section for the fundraiser. “I created The Chasing M’s Foundation as a vehicle that will allow me to deliver that impact.”
The NFL suspended the game following the defensive back’s injury and released a statement saying Hamlin was in critical condition in the hospital.
His marketing rep released a further update revealing Hamlin’s vitals were back to normal but that he was being put under for a breathing tube and further tests.
