Michigan’s Big Ten three-peat very much alive with Blake Corum returning
By John Buhler
With Blake Corum returning to Michigan, the Wolverines could be three-peating in the Big Ten.
Amid the constant cacophony of Jim Harbaugh to the NFL rumors, the Michigan Wolverines got great news regarding one of its very best players: Running back Blake Corum is coming back!
Had it not been for a season-ending injury, Corum would have been a Heisman Trophy finalist. He might have been the difference maker vs. the TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl. After tasting bitter defeat in the College Football Playoff semifinals two seasons in a row, it comes as no surprise Corum is returning to Ann Arbor with a Big Ten three-peat on his mind, and then some.
Here is Corum’s message tweeted out to Michigan fans about his decision to come back in 2023.
Blake Corum returning to Michigan: How far can the Wolverines go next season?
No matter what Harbaugh decides to do, Michigan should be one of the best teams in college football again next year. Though three-peating in any conference is hard, Michigan has beaten Ohio State in its last two meetings. More importantly, the Wolverines will get the Buckeyes in The Big House next Thanksgiving Weekend. Scheduling aside, the Wolverines are loaded with players.
With quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Donovan Edwards not yet draft eligible, Michigan could have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Although they may not three-peat in the Joe Moore Award department again next year, Michigan has a firm identity, one that suggests it will try to its best to out-physical the opposition. The big question is if that will be good enough.
While Michigan will probably not be favored to win the final four-team College Football Playoff, the Wolverines are one of about eight teams with a strong possibility of getting in. Although Georgia will likely be there again, TCU could be a major regression candidate next fall. For now, Corum is rejoining his Michigan teammates, destined for another top-10 finish and maybe a playoff victory?
It was not a guarantee that Corum would be returning, but it certainly makes Michigan even better.
