Ranking NFL quarterbacks based on 2022: 31. Taylor Heinicke, Commanders

The Washington Commanders made it all the way to the final weeks of the season before being eliminated from playoff contention, and part of the reason they were able to sustain their positioning is due to the lift that Taylor Heinicke gave them in a few games along the way.

Quarterback play in Washington was far from perfect this year, but Heinicke did go 5-3-1 as a starter. He finished his season with 1,859 yards, 12 touchdowns and six picks.

Immediately after losing his job to Carson Wentz late in the season, Wentz came in and threw three interceptions in the following game. So, things didn’t go all that well for Wentz this year either.

But, it was clear that Heinicke was the guy the Commanders rallied around, and that’s worth something. The Commanders may end up moving on from both Heinicke and Wentz this offseason, should the opportunity present itself to land a franchise quarterback. But, this offseason’s quarterback market and draft scenarios will be wild, to say the least.

At the very least, Heinicke proved once again that he belongs in the NFL this year. Even if just a backup, Heinicke showed enough to hang around the league.
