3 reasons Daniel Jones should be the Giants’ QB of the future, No. 1: Thriving in Brian Daboll/Mike Kakfa offense
Perhaps the most logical reason why the Giants should keep Jones is due in part to how well he has played and progressed in the offensive scheme set up by Daboll and coordinator Mike Kafka.
In his rookie season, Jones did play well in then-head coach Pat Shurmur’s offense. The thing was, he was a lame-duck head coach that was fired after the 2019 campaign. Then Jones had to play ini an offense led by former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. The play-calling was less than ideal under Garrett, and it didn’t get any better after he was let go midway through the 2021 season. Garrett was replaced by former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens as offensive play-caller. Jones suffered a season-ending injury in Kitchens’ first game on the job.
Daboll was praised for how well he worked with Josh Allen in Buffalo. As we all know, Allen went from a project quarterback with potential as a rookie into one of the top players at the position. The hope was that he could get the most out of Jones.
As for Kafka, he spent the start of his NFL coaching career with the Kansas City Chiefs. From starting off as an offensive assistant in 2017 into the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 2021. Kafka got to work with probably the best quarterback in the NFL right now in Patrick Mahomes.
Jones had the chance to be coached by two figures who worked alongside the top signal callers in the league. And the results speak for themselves.
In his fourth year, Jones has significantly cut down on his turnovers, runs the football much more than in years past, and is making some incredible throws. This year, Jones threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just five interceptions while completing 67.2 percent of his passes. Jones held the lowest interception percentage in the league with 1.1 (five interceptions on 472 attempts). Jones also recorded career-highs with 708 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 120 carries.
Jones has thrived and developed in this offense. While it remains to be seen if Kafka ends up with a head coaching gig this year (interview requests from the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers) or in the future, Jones will still have Daboll. It makes too much sense for the Giants to keep Jones around for multiple years.
