MLB power rankings: American League Central biggest free agent mistakes

Chicago White Sox —Jean Segura

The White Sox need an answer at second base, and Segura could have provided that for them. Chicago has a chance to make some noise in what feels like an AL Central that could still be up for grabs (sorry, Cleveland fans), but not being able to fill a need at second with a veteran bat certainly feels like a big missed opportunity.

Cleveland Guardians — Michael Brantley

Speaking of veteran bats, Cleveland was supposedly in the mix for Brantley before his return to Houston. While the Guardians may have their outfield set with Steven Kwan, Myles Straw, and Oscar Gonzalez, having a veteran depth piece like Brantley would have given Cleveland more options with the lineup and protection in case of any injuries.

Kansas City Royals — Corey Kluber

Kansas City has a young core and isn’t going to spend a lot of money in free agency. That’s where the addition of Kluber into the rotation would have made sense. Jordan Lyles will fill a veteran need for the Royals here, but Kluber and his one-year, $10 million deal that he signed with the Red Sox would seem to be a fit for the budget and the roster as the Royals take another step into their rebuild.

Detroit Tigers — Michael Conforto

The Tigers are already set at designated hitter with Miguel Cabrera, so maybe Conforto wasn’t a perfect fit for Detroit, but the Tigers certainly need some help in the outfield and some additional pop in the lineup. Hey, with those new outfield fence dimensions, who knows what damage Conforto could have done at Comerica?

Minnesota Twins — AJ Pollock

The Twins were reportedly looking at Pollock to help them fill a need for a right-handed bat in the outfield, and that’s exactly what he will do now for the Seattle Mariners, a team the Twins could be battling for a postseason spot. Pollock might have been a bit of a gamble after a subpar 2022 season, but a veteran presence on a team pushing for the playoffs is usually a plus.
