MLB power rankings: American League West biggest free agent mistakes

Seattle Mariners — Brandon Nimmo

Nimmo was on the short list of so many MLB teams before re-signing with the Mets, but there’s no question that he could have been a difference-maker for a Seattle team that is looking to not only get back to the postseason, but do damage there as well.

Houston Astros — Justin Verlander

When we made our way-too-early MLB postseason predictions, a Mets-Astros World Series matchup was just too good to pass up, partially because of the strength of the teams and partially because of the storyline there would be with Verlander on the mound for the Mets against his former team. While Houston doesn’t have many flaws, bringing back the defending Cy Young Award winner certainly could have strengthened their rotation for 2023.

Los Angeles Angels — Nathan Eovaldi

The Angels spent the offseason redoing their rotation with the addition of Tyler Anderson from the cross-town rival Dodgers, but adding another veteran arm to the mix certainly could have helped the cause for Ohtani, Trout, and company. Have the Angels really done enough this offseason to get to the postseason and convince Ohtani to stay?

Texas Rangers — Joey Gallo

This is the perfect match as the Rangers need hitting and Gallo needed somewhere to show he can still perform at a high level. With the Twins giving him an $11 million deal, it feels like a missed opportunity for the Rangers, a team that certainly hasn’t been shy about handing out money the last two offseasons.

Oakland A’s — Craig Kimbrel

Were the A’s really going to pay Kimbrel (or any other free agent) this offseason? It’s highly unlikely, but Kimbrel could have been a nice fit in the back end of the bullpen in Oakland. For a franchise that has been in high trade mode lately, signing Kimbrel (who inked a one-year, $10 million deal with Philadelphia) and hoping he can perform to flip him at the trade deadline seems like a chance that was worth taking.
